Almodovar: Colour Analysis

Pedro Almodóvar, the Spanish filmmaker, is known for his use of vibrant and bold colors in his films. He uses color to express emotions, create visual contrast, and to convey meaning. Almodóvar's use of color can be seen in various aspects of his films, including the costumes, sets, lighting, and even the makeup. He uses color to create a visual language that reflects the emotions and themes of his stories.

In many of his films, Almodóvar employs a vivid and saturated color palette that heightens the intensity and emotion of the scenes. He uses contrasting colors to create a dynamic tension and to emphasize the psychological states of his characters.

Almodóvar's use of color also reflects the cultural and social context of his films. For example, in his earlier films, which were made during the Franco dictatorship in Spain, he often used colors associated with counterculture movements, such as bright pinks and blues, to challenge the conservative social norms of the time.

Examples;

In the film "All About My Mother," the color red is used to symbolize passion, love, and danger. The character Agrado wears a bright red dress, which symbolizes her flamboyant personality and her desire to be noticed. The color red is also used to represent the HIV virus, which is a major plot point in the film.
In "Talk to Her," Almodovar uses the color blue to represent the emotional state of the characters. The scenes that take place in the hospital are predominantly blue, which creates a cold, sterile environment that reflects the characters' emotional state. The blue color also represents the sense of isolation and loneliness that the characters experience.
In "Volver," the color white is used to represent purity and innocence. The character Raimunda is often dressed in white, which emphasizes her kindness and goodness. The color white is also used to symbolize the spirits of the dead, which play a significant role in the film.
In "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," Almodovar uses bright, bold colors to reflect the wild, chaotic emotions of the characters. The bright, eye-catching costumes and set design create a sense of frenzy and excitement that mirrors the characters' emotional state.

Reflection+Inspiration:
After spending all of my Easter break watching and rewatching Almodovar's movies. I came full circle with myself with the first time I began considering him an inspiration for my work. The thing that has drawn me to his work since the beginning were the bright saturated colours, specifically because i didn't completely resonate with that aesthetic and that's what made it more special, the colours were so well used that I could not not like it. It was like entering an alternate universe with the feeling that I had already visited it.

I challenged myself to step aside of my "comfort zone" for the video outcome, and do something that doesn't look like everything else I do in terms of aesthetics, but remains true to my style. I had Almodovar's work present in my mind the whole time. Specially, the colour palette.
